A realisation, a new belief and the joy of travelling

The joy of travelling

I have been meaning to research Humanism for a while now, since my friend Sophie told me she is a Humanist. I found that the basic principles of Humanism are that 1) there is no God 2) We have one life and so we need to live it 3) When you die there’s no after life, you live on through your children and the memories that others have of you 4) We don’t need a book or God or religious guidelines to decipher right/ wrong, we can make these decisions based on feelings/ instinct/ relationships/ experience 5) We live for relationships/ experiences 6) The most likely way we came into existence is through scientific theory.

I was reading it and just thinking, “Wow, this is completely what I believe!!”. And ALL my life I’ve wanted to believe in something, in a purpose for life/ set of values, but just haven’t found it, and I now realise that I don’t believe in “nothing” -that we just live and then we die… I thought this is what being an Atheist was.

But I believe in so much more than that… I believe that we live for the experiences/ relationships that we have in life and we learn from experience and can constantly improve. Life is beautiful and only occurs once, so enjoy it. It is also really good to know that there is a group of people who have exactly the same life beliefs as me. I was reading about Humanists and it says they often volunteer or take part in Community work and they believe in striving to improve the human race and humanity.

This is what my degree in Community Drama was all about!

In a weird way, I feel I have found myself here. I have also realised that travel is my passion, and I want to do it for a very long time.

I’m not writing this to try to convert everyone to Humanism, but merely to let you know one of the ways in which travel changed my life in a totally unexpected way. People often talk about having a “life changing experience” when they travel, and it can start to sound very cliche. However, I honestly, whole heartedly believe that travel will reach you on a deep and meaningful level that not many other experiences can, and that it will change you forever.
